Bill & Melinda Gates’ 2019 Annual Letter

While at Gates Ventures, I worked on the creative for the online version of Bill and Melinda Gates’ 2019 Annual Letter. Throughout the course of this project we approached several different concepts, but this mini-objects-on color was the winning creative we used to visualize Bill and Melinda’s nine ‘surprises’ of 2019.

For this project, I was responsible for ideating concepts for each of the nine surprises, creative directing the shoots, photographing and designing the hero graphics. See the full campaign here.

For this campaign, there was also a feature on Bill Gates’ Instagram story to promote Bill and Melinda’s 2019 annual letter. I translated the original creative from the online letter to a social media story as seen below.

Upheaval

Excerpt giveaway campaign

This custom CTA on gatesnotes.com promotes Jared Diamond’s book called Upheaval by encouraging users to download a free excerpt. The campaign emphasizes that this offer is for Gates Notes Insiders exclusively, so that users are inspired to sign up. This project includes custom inline article CTA designs, sign-up/log-in screens, and social media posts. See the final comps and user flow below.

Bill’s Holiday Book List - @thisisbillgates Instagram Story

Social campaign

This social campaign was used to promote 5 books Bill loved in 2018 on Bill’s Instagram story. For this project, I created mini ornament versions of each book and hung them on a tree along with other items that appear in Bill’s video about these books. I then took photos of the setup and title hanging on the tree to create a cohesive holiday post. Each featured image also had a ‘swipe up’ option which linked to the corresponding individual articles about each book.

An ongoing project I had the privilege of working on while at Gates Ventures was the creative for Heroes In The Field. Every month Bill Gates introduces one of the millions of people making a difference in our world. For this project, I illustrated each hero in a simple linework style.
